NASA has created an Internet site just for kids your age. It has pictures, information, games, and questions. It is FUN!
There are four sets of directions for using StarChild. Do one at a time. Click on the link below.
Directions for Part 7:
- Print these directions. Go to the [File Menu] and choose "Print" or press APPLE-P. Keep the paper and check off the parts you finish.
A. Learn new words in the Starchild Glossary. 1. Click here to enter StarChild. 2. Click on the Solar System - Level 1 button. 3. Click on the Planets button. 4. Click on the name of your planet. 5. Read about your planet. Notice that some of the words are light blue and underlined. 6. Click on the underlined words and you will enter the StarChild Glossary. 7. Write the word and the definition for at least 5 of the underlined words. 8. Use the {BACK BUTTON} to return to your planet's page. 9. Instead or writing the words and definitions on paper, you can type them on the computer. Have your teacher show you how to have the Internet and SimpleText running at the same time. 10. Give your paper to the teacher.
B. Answer solar system questions. 1. Click here to enter StarChild. 2. Click on the Solar System - Level 1 button. 3. Click on the Planets button. 4. Click on the name of your planet. 5. Read about your planet. 6. Read the question at the bottom. 7. Write the question and your answer in complete sentences. 8. Click the yellow {THE ANSWER BUTTON}. 9. Did you get it right? If not, correct your paper. 10. Instead or writing the words and definitions on paper, you can type them on the computer. Have your teacher show you how to have the Internet and SimpleText running at the same time. 12. Give your paper to the teacher.
C. Find out how much you weigh on your planet. 1. Click here to enter StarChild. 2. Click on the Solar System - Level 1 button. 3. Click on the Planets button. 4. Click on the name of your planet. 5. Go down to the bottom of the page. 6. Click on the yellow {THE FACTS BUTTON}. 7. Find out what number goes with "Gravitational Pull". Write it down. Don't forget the decimal point. 8. Go to the [APPLE MENU] and choose "Calculator".Use a calculator for this. You can find one under the [APPLE MENU]. Use * for times.
9. Multiply the "Gravitational Pull" number with how much you weigh.
--Gravitational Pull X Your Weight = How much you would weigh on your planet--Use the {*} button for X (times).
9.Do you weigh more or less? 10. Try it for an elephant. Bull elephants can weigh 12,000 pounds. 12. Copy the math problems onto paper and give them to your teacher.
----Example: 2.1 X 12,000 = 25,200---
D. Play fun games to test your solar system learning. 1. Click here to enter StarChild. 2. Click on the Solar System - Level 1 button. 3. Click on the "Solar System Activities" link. 4. There are four games, play them all. 5. Have fun.
