Picture Dictionary Activity for Primary Students

Directions for the picture dictionary:
  1. Print these directions. It will be easier to follow them if you have a hard copy.

  2. The Little Explorers' Picture Dictionary is an online picture dictionary with links for almost every word.

  3. Have each member of a small group choose a word to look up in the dictionary.

  4. You might have already chosen a theme like animals, dinosaurs, tools, vehicles, etc.

Other possible themes are: food, clothing, planets, people, insects.
  5. Have each student click on the letter that starts his/her word.

  6. As each letter's page loads onto the computer's screen have the group try to read each entry using the pictures as clues.

  7. If the word you are looking for appears on the page, have the student read the definition.

  8. If the word is blue and underlined it is a link to more information about the word.

  9. Have the student click it.

  10. Some of the extra information is very appropriate for younger students and some isn't. If it looks too hard, be ready to read and summarize the information for the student.

If it looks like the student can handle the reading, have them try.

  11. Let the next student click on the letter that begins his/her word and repeat the whole process.

  12. If you are using an older computer, you may want to stay on one letter rather than skipping around.
