Lesson Description

Summary:

Students use the Calendar application built into the Desktop Environment as a tool to help solve math problems involving calendar time from a math book assignment.

 

State and NationalStandards:

Adams 12 Five Star Schools Math Curriculum

Standard V: Students use a variety of tools and techniques to make and use measurements in problem and everyday situations.

 

Local Standards:

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SKILLS CONTINUUM

Standard #4 Instructional Software: Students use instructional software to enhance learning in content areas.

4A      Uses age appropriate software to help understand and/or practice concepts in

         various content areas

                                   

Lesson Outcomes:

Students learn to manipulate an electronic calendar and gain experience dealing with calendars in general. They also practice the math skills involved with time measurement.

 

Assessment:

Teachers grade the math assignment normally but may want to observe students actually manipulating the electronic calendar application in the lab.

 

 

Classroom and Time Management

Student Prerequisites:

Type in as needed.

Lesson Preparation:

Identify the math assignment utilizing calendars.

 

Time Frame:

One 45 minute period

 

Implementation Steps:

Teacher instructs the students on how to launch and use the Calendar Application. Adding events is probably optional but manipulating the views is essential.

Teacher reminds the students on how to change desktops in order to have the Calendar on one and Writer on another.

Students read the calendar related problems from their assignment.

Students use the Calendar application to determine the answers.

Students use StarOffice Writer to record their answers.
